Understanding Bridge Inspections

All bridges in Kentucky (even county-owned) are inspected every two years by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). In September 2024, the state bridge inspector notified the County of structural issues on the Salem Creek bridge that impacted how much weight it could safely bear. Load limits were then lowered from 22 tons to 9 tons. Once weight limits were changed, the bridge was placed on an annual inspection cycle.

On September 23, 2025, Boone County was notified that the bridge had continued to degrade and was required to be closed to all vehicular traffic.

Repair Plan

The bridge sits roughly just five feet over McCoys Fork. Water and debris from the creek have eroded the steel supports that are often submerged by flood waters. Boone County Public Works began working with an engineering firm earlier this year. Already, a design plan is completed to address the current structural issues. Because of the last minute nature of the notice, the County has not yet received a construction start date from the contractor. As soon as that's received, residents will be notified. Eventual Replacement

Built in 1950, the bridge has reached the end of its lifespan. Emergency repairs this fall will allow the bridge to safely reopen. The County is still planning for a full replacement. Planning, design and permitting for that new bridge has already begun, but work will not be completed for a few years. Additional closures may be necesssary when the bridge is replaced. The County is committed to keeping residents updated and sharing the latest information.
